Delivering national impact through measurement, innovation, and learning

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s National Metrology Institute. To realise the full potential of this training offer, NPL needed a digital learning ecosystem that could meet the demands of both learners and internal teams, technically robust, intuitive to use, and future-ready.

The Challenge: Outgrowing a Basic Learning Platform

Prior to engaging with Titus, NPL had already introduced some elements of digital learning into their training offer. But the limitations of their existing system were increasingly holding them back:

NPL needed an integrated, learner-first solution, one that reflected the calibre of their scientific reputation and would enable them to scale and commercialise their learning offer with confidence.

The Solution: A Unified, Brand-Led Learning Ecosystem with Moodle and WordPress

We partnered with NPL to create a comprehensive digital learning ecosystem, consisting of a custom Moodle LMS and an integrated WordPress-powered course hub.

1. A Custom Moodle LMS Designed for Technical Training Excellence

Their Moodle LMS was the only one that would satisfy all our wants for our technical/mathematical course content and they guided us through setting the system up so that the UX was what we had aspired to accomplish.

Custom UX/UI design

A user-centric, intuitive interface aligned with NPL’s brand identity, making complex content easier to access, navigate and engage with for a wide range of learner profiles.

Support for rich scientific content

The LMS is capable of delivering a wide range of learning formats, including interactive simulations, data-heavy assessments, and STEM-specific learning tools, essential for technical training.

Blended learning model

The platform enables a fully blended approach, seamlessly integrating online learning with classroom sessions, remote workshops, pre-course assessments and post-course evaluation.

Personalised learning pathways

Using Moodle’s extensive customisation capabilities, Titus created a system that allows NPL to tailor training journeys to individual learners, based on role, skill level, prior knowledge, or qualification requirements.

2. A Custom WordPress Course Hub for Seamless Discovery and Purchase

Recently, our needs have altered - we still want the great UX and now we're needing a more web style front end. The team at Titus have worked with us to explore our need and provide us with a solution that will see us offering an even better selection/purchasing experience.

To complement the Moodle platform, Titus also developed a custom WordPress site that serves as NPL’s dedicated training hub. Designed to act as the front door to their learning offer, the site is:

Searchable, accessible, and e-commerce-ready

Learners can easily browse the course catalogue, filter by topic or format, and purchase training via a streamlined checkout flow.

Integrated with Moodle for seamless access

Using single sign-on (SSO), users move smoothly from browsing to learning without creating separate accounts or re-authenticating.

Aligned with NPL’s trusted visual identity

Maintaining consistency with the main NPL website was essential. Titus worked closely with the in-house team to ensure design, tone, and navigation remained cohesive across platforms.

Ellie was the first woman to join Titus and has paved the way for many more since then. After studying for a degree in Fashion and Marketing, Ellie was lucky to find herself at fashion weeks and photoshoots.

Now she’s switched from talk of the front row to front end design and has brought loads of transferable knowledge to Titus. Ellie has also found a real passion for tech, especially in the learning sector, helping clients create positive change for their organisations.

Callum Barrett

Senior Brand Executive

As one of the youngest people at Titus but at the same time one of the oldest serving members of the team, Callum has graced Titus with his broad smile and positive attitude for over 5 years now. As a key member of the marketing team, Callum works across all areas, both on and offline, to ensure that all Titus brands and communication are on point.

After missing out on the opportunity to go to University the first time around, management encouraged him to enrol in our course alongside his work. He is now studying to achieve his Level 6 Diploma in Professional Digital Marketing.

Always bringing innovation and new ideas, Dec studied a degree in Journalism but found his passion in digital marketing. Dec has also worked in marketing for one of the countries biggest retailers and within the property sector.
