Adaptive Learning

December 20, 2022

Deliver a tailored learning experience by using adaptive learning and allowing individuals to choose how they interact with assigned courses, programs and learning materials.

With Totara Learn, users can select the learning path that best fits their needs or managers can make a range of choices available to them based upon different criteria such as previous course performance, completion of other learning items or job assignments.

By adapting to the unique learning requirements of each individual user, Totara Learn can direct learners towards relevant resources and support their ongoing engagement in further learning and development activities.

Track Learner Activity

Completion requirements can be set for each activity and resource within Totara Learn. The completion of activities can be marked by learners themselves or it can be automatically tracked based on a range of criteria specific to the content type.

Specific completion requirements can also be applied to courses with automated or manual criteria or even a combination of the two. Such flexibility supports the more advanced completion requirements of courses in plus sign-off workflows for learning and development professionals.

Learners can view their progress at a glance and see what they are yet to complete when a course block is added to a page, displaying a personalised summary of their completion requirements.

Provide Conditional Access

Configure courses within Totara Learn to deliver assigned and controlled access to learning content. Courses may also be configured to create fully adaptive learning paths with the courses and activities made available to learners based on their compliance to a range of criteria.

Such compliance criteria can include one or a combination of things such as organisation, position, audience membership, preferred language, user profile information, previous course completions and current grade ranges.

By utilising these access restriction options, course designers and training managers can create adaptive courses which align with the engagement levels, interests, previous knowledge and current competencies of individual learners.

Access restrictions can be made visible to learners or the learning material can remain entirely invisible until users meet specific conditions.

Programs and Certifications

Longer prescribed or adaptive learning paths may also be supported via Totara Learn’s programs and certifications functionality. With programs and certifications arranged in course sets, administrators can specify whether learners are required to complete one, all, or a specified number of courses within a group.

Further conditions can then be set such as the number of courses to be completed or the order in which they are to be completed, so learners are easily guided through complex course collections or towards related courses. Where learners have different learning requirements based on their roles and responsibilities within the organisation, this can be an effective tool for managing learning paths.
