Moodle 4.5 – Everything you need to know

January 13, 2025

Moodle 4.5 is here - Unlock the power of AI for your courses.

Moodle 4.5 is here and with it comes the introduction of AI Functionality into core Moodle. This marks a pivotal moment in the progression of Moodle as it lays the foundations for a smarter, more adaptive future while staying true to the platform’s trusted functionality.

In this blog post, we’ll detail some of these functionalities that are available to Moodle users now.

How can you access AI in Moodle?

To access the AI features available within Moodle, an Administrator would first need access to either an OpenAI or Azure account. Once this is running, Administrators can add the AI provider to the Site Administration settings.

What can you do with AI in Moodle?

Moodle 4.5 includes three key AI functionality features:

1. AI Image Generation

Inputting a prompt into Moodle will generate these images, and you will have the option to choose the quality of the image and the dimensions required, such as square shape, landscape, or portrait.

These images can either enhance course content within individual courses or act as thumbnails of the courses, making them more appealing to learners.

2. AI Text Generation

Text generation allows you to generate texts based on prompts to input into course content. For example, if you want a paragraph written to be expanded upon or to generate some questions based on text you have provided.

3. AI Text Condensing

This feature summarises text from courses into shorter, more palatable content, allowing you to present long-written course content neatly and efficiently.

These exciting new features are Moodle’s first foray into AI, and as future versions are introduced, the scope of what’s available will expand significantly.

What other features can I expect in Moodle 4.5?

As with all Moodle upgrades, several other features and improvements are introduced. These include:

45AssignmentTopArea

Assignment UI improvements

TinyMCE_screen_record

Media enhancements

quiznotif

Quiz improvements

addsubsection

Subsections improvements

For a comprehensive list of the new features available within Moodle 4.5, you can check Moodle’s release notes here.

Why should I upgrade?

Aside from the new features that will be available with this latest upgrade, security is one of the key reasons to upgrade as soon as possible.

The Moodle network constantly monitors and tracks Moodle to stay ahead of any vulnerabilities and patches these with each upgrade to ensure maximum security. By keeping your platform in line with the latest versions, you ensure your organisation complies with the best security practices.

Moodle 4.5 is an LTS (long-term support) upgrade, meaning this version will be supported for a longer period. This makes it a great option for upgrading your platform.

Moodle 4.5 is available to all Titus customers, we have begun reaching out to schedule upgrades, but if you would like yours scheduled earlier, please contact your Customer Success Team rep or send your request here.
