Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) widely known as Doctors Without Borders is one of the world’s leading medical humanitarian organisations. Operating in more than 70 countries, MSF provides emergency medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, or exclusion from healthcare.
To deliver on this mission, MSF must ensure that tens of thousands of medical and operational staff are equipped with the right knowledge, at the right time, often in some of the most complex and volatile environments in the world.
Training has always been a cornerstone of MSF’s global response. But as operations expanded, their existing Moodle-based learning platform struggled to keep pace.
MSF was already using online learning to educate medical teams around the world. However, their legacy Moodle setup lacked:
To continue delivering critical training, whether onboarding clinicians in South Sudan or refreshing infection control knowledge during an Ebola outbreak, MSF needed a platform that was robust, flexible, and truly global.
MSF partnered with Titus, a certified Moodle Premium Partner and award-winning LMS specialist, to reimagine and modernise their learning infrastructure.
Together, we designed and implemented a fully custom Moodle LMS platform, tailored to the operational, technical, and cultural needs of MSF’s global workforce.
The first step was to transition MSF away from their legacy system without disrupting critical training initiatives already in progress.
Titus managed a secure, phased migration that included:
Comprehensive data extraction and backups to protect learning records
Seamless migration of courses, user data, and historical training records
Rigorous QA and UAT processes to ensure reliability in high-stakes environments
The result: zero data loss, minimal downtime, and continuity for thousands of frontline learners.
MSF’s user base includes doctors, nurses, logisticians, and support staff working in crisis zones with limited digital literacy and inconsistent connectivity. The LMS had to be frictionless.
Titus developed a bespoke Moodle theme based on UX best practices, with:
Mobile-responsive design for use on any device
Streamlined navigation that works even with low bandwidth
Localised language support to remove barriers to access
The result: This user-first approach has dramatically reduced learner drop-off rates and shortened the time to onboard new staff.
Titus embedded a suite of smart features designed to support the complexity of MSF’s learning needs:
Integrated Zoom plugin, enabling in-platform live training, essential for urgent upskilling during outbreaks or emergencies
Automated certification workflows, ensuring compliance with internal medical standards and external regulatory bodies
Multi-tenancy architecture, giving each MSF region and department its own secure learning space—with central oversight
Custom reporting and learning analytics, allowing MSF to track training effectiveness and coverage in real time.
The result: Every enhancement was made with long-term scalability in mind, ensuring the platform could grow with MSF’s evolving operations.
Beyond technology, Titus became a true partner in capability-building. Our consultants delivered ongoing training and strategic support for MSF’s internal teams, empowering them to:
Confidently manage users and courses at scale
Leverage Moodle’s full potential through custom features and integrations
Develop internal champions to maintain and evolve the platform independently
It's been a great experience working with Titus so far. They have added huge value to our course and I would not hesitate to recommend them to other colleagues who are looking to build an LMS.

With their new Titus-powered Moodle LMS, MSF is now able to:
Most importantly, the platform enables MSF to respond faster when crises hit, because their people have the right knowledge at their fingertips, anywhere in the world. Titus is proud to support MSF’s mission by providing a scalable, flexible, and resilient LMS that empowers those on the frontlines of global health.
