5 ways to improve LMS engagement

August 8, 2024

Your LMS platform is up and running, you successfully launched to your key stakeholders and can see that the site has already received its vital early adopters. How do we now keep these engaged to make sure they keep coming back?

In this post we’ll explore our top 5 ways to improve e-learning engagement which you could adopt today.

 INTERACTIVE CONTENT

One of the most effective ways to engage learners is through interactive content. Static text and long videos can quickly lead to disengagement, but including interactive elements can make a significant difference.

Incorporating quizzes at the end of each module can reinforce the key learnings from the content and gauge any potential gaps in understanding of the subject matter.

Gamification is another tactic you could use to increase engagement on your platform. Elements such as leaderboards, badges and rewards for hitting certain progress milestones can go a long way to keeping learning satisfying alongside incentivising completion of courses and returning to the platform.

Using feedback features such as polls at the end of your courses to gain both qualitative and quantitative data around how much your users enjoyed the content can also go a long way to understanding areas for improvement, which in turn can inform the design of future courses for maximum engagement.

PERSONALISED LEARNING

Every learner is unique, with different strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Personalised learning paths cater to individual needs, making the learning experience more relevant and engaging.

Personalised learning can mean different things to different people. To some it may be the option to work through the content at your own pace. Breaking your content down into smaller, easy to digest sections can allow users to work through as much or as little of your content as possible, without feeling overwhelmed.

For others, personalised learning takes the form of being able to choose from a variety of topics that align with their specific knowledge gaps of learning objectives. Ensuring that your platform is easy to navigate and find relevant courses is vital to ensuring that users get what they need and keep coming back.

ENGAGING MULTIMEDIA

Lets face it, nobody enjoys reading page after page of text-heavy slides. Employing a variety of different multimedia formats to your learning content will help keep things fresh and interesting to your users.

Videos and animations are a visual and dynamic way to deliver complex and multifaceted concepts in a compact, easy to understand manner. Consider using videos of course leaders in your content to give your delivery a more personal feel.

Similarly infographics and other imagery to help to break down data and present it in a more visually appealing and easy to digest format. This could be paired with high-quality audio content to compliment the data on the infographic and add a deeper layer of elearning for your users.

COLLABORATIVE LEARNING

Learning is often more effective and enjoyable when done collaboratively. Encouraging interaction and collaboration among learners can lead to deeper understanding and increased engagement.

If you have the resources to monitor and admin a discussion forum, this could be a powerful tool for your learners to share ideas, ask questions and discuss wider topics surrounding your subject matter. Building a sense of community among learners can go a long way to ensuring users are regularly engaging with your platform.

Hosting live sessions and webinars for your learners is another way to drive engagement amongst your users. This could be themed around a certain topic or element to do with your course or be a more generic “workshop” style webinar where users are encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions in real time.

CONTINUOUS MOTIVATION & SUPPORT

As time goes on, even the most enthusiastic learners’ motivation to continue engaging with your content can drop over time. Ensuring that they are regularly supported and inspired to interact with your platform will be key to ensuring they stay interested.

Maintaining regular communication about new courses and features on your platform is central to ensuring your users are kept in the know with regards to your content.

If you haven’t already, consider segmenting your users by courses they’ve completed or content they’ve engaged with so you can target them with relevant updates and offers which may be of interest to them.

Employing an automated system for updating users on their course progress is another effective tool for improving engagement, you can use these communications to remind them of potential rewards and incentives for completing courses.

Ensure users have an easy way to contact you should they have any questions around your courses and content. Making users feel supported throughout their learning journey will build trust and make them feel more comfortable and confident when interacting with your platform.
