1st4sport Qualifications: Case Study

August 6, 2019

Background:

1st4sport Qualifications is an awarding organisation specialising in offering vocational and occupational qualifications in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector. Prior to working with Titus Learning, 1st4sport provided learning and assessment materials via paper-based or PDF format.

In January, the company commissioned Titus Learning to develop a bespoke e-learning system that would host its library of thousands of physical resources, and facilitate the delivery and assessment of learning programmes, CPD courses and end point assessments via the web.

“We chose to work with Titus Learning as they came very highly recommended from a fellow partner within the sector and following the introductory meeting with the team it quickly became a no brainer. The service they offered and seeing previous case studies of their work made our decision very easy, and their professionalism and flexibility shone. We couldn’t wait to get started.” – Jo Saunders, Learning and Assessment Team Manager, 1st4Sport Qualifications.

The challenge:

To create a bespoke e-learning platform that would allow 1st4sport Qualifications to move its assessment materials online with minimal disruption, deliver manageable eLearning solutions to support both regulated and non-regulated provision and offer multi-tenancy capabilities for its partner organisations.

“Moodle is going to be the spine of our education offer and programmes moving forward. As an awarding organisation within the sector of sport and health the breadth of our work is vast and we plan to use the platform for; hosting full programmes of learning, short CPD courses and we will also be using it to host our end point assessments as part of our apprenticeship offer amongst many other grand plans. It is a very exciting future for us!” – Jo Saunders, Learning and Assessment Team Manager, 1st4Sport Qualifications.

Deliverables:

  • Bespoke Moodle e-learning platform with the infrastructure to allow increased user numbers when necessary.
  • Custom Moodle theme with a series of UX improvements to improve navigation and usability of the platform.
  • Proactive training and support package.
  • 4-stage implementation plan with oversight from a dedicated internal team.
  • Multi-tenancy feature to extend the use of the platform to partner organisations.

“They key aspects for us were the ability for us to skin and form a platform that was best suited to us and our needs. The flexibility Moodle offers is perfect for us and our partners, we really are only hindered by our imagination and this really drew us to Moodle as opposed to other LMS systems in the market.” – Jo Saunders, Learning and Assessment Team Manager, 1st4Sport Qualifications.

Solution:

Working closely with the team at 1st4sport, Titus Learning designed a custom Moodle installation featuring a bespoke theme, developed to maximise ease of navigation and usability while accurately reflecting the organisation’s existing branding.

A key part of the solution was the inclusion of multi-tenancy capability, meaning 1st4sport would be able to offer its partner organisations their own instances of the platform, inheriting the same functionality and features but with individually tailored branding.

Throughout the development and implementation period, 1st4sport benefitted from a dedicated project manager at Titus Learning who oversaw each stage of the new platform’s construction and testing, through to launch.

As part of the proactive support package, 1st4sport are registered for multiple training webinars which will take place throughout the first year, as well as access to online resources and face to face training sessions.

“The team have been incredibly reliable and fantastic with supporting our staff during the development of the platform. We are just approaching our public live date and the process has been so smooth, I have sometimes forgotten what a big project this really is due to the management and support we have been given.” Jo Saunders, Learning and Assessment Team Manager, 1st4Sport Qualifications.

Outcome and impact:

During the implementation period, 1st4sport praised the proactive nature of the support offered by the Titus Learning team, and how this made such a large project easily manageable.

Prior to the launch of the new platform, the number of physical resources 1st4sport had to provide was huge and the logistics surrounding their delivery was a significant challenge. These issues have been alleviated with the introduction of the new Moodle platform, saving administration time and reducing the cost of supplying these resources. On top of this, the analytic features of Moodle provide 1st4sport with a high-level overview of the usage of their resources.

Another key aspect of the solution is the flexibility of Moodle and how Titus Learning was able to skin and develop the platform to meet 1st4sport’s individual requirements.

The organisation has big ambitions for the future and has already discussed plans on increasing its offering to provide more qualifications through their Moodle platform.

One of their partners, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), having seen the Moodle platform in action has signed on to create their own e-learning system using the multi-tenancy feature. The platform will have the same functionality as 1st4sport’s but will be presented with their own branding, and will deliver their own individual content and resources.

“We plan to offer more and more of our qualifications via our Moodle site, giving the learner the option to learn interactively or through our more traditional methods. We plan to use the multi-tenancy feature more moving forward as well, which will offer our partners the opportunity to their own fully functional e-learning site as well as using our development staff to support their growth into the interactive learning market. As I mentioned above this is a really exciting time for us, watch this space.” – Jo Saunders, Learning and Assessment Team Manager, 1st4Sport Qualifications.
