The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is the leading professional body for physics and engineering in medicine in the UK. For over 60 years, IPEM has been at the forefront of promoting excellence in the field, supporting healthcare professionals who apply physics and engineering to patient care. With a membership of around 4,000 professionals, IPEM spans physicists, engineers, technologists, and academics working in hospitals, research, and industry.
IPEM’s mission is to advance healthcare through the application of physics and engineering, supporting members with professional development, guidance, standards, and advocacy. The organisation provides accreditation, training, events, and publications to ensure members maintain high standards of practice and stay up to date with rapid technological and scientific advances.
Like many membership organisations, IPEM also faces the challenge of evolving in a changing environment. Traditional revenue streams, such as publication income, were projected to decline due to increasing open-access models. At the same time, members increasingly expect high-quality digital learning experiences, flexible training, and integrated tools to support professional development.
The Challenge: Fragmented Training and CPD Processes Limiting Growth

IPEM is struggling with a training and professional development framework that is fragmented and operationally inefficient, making it difficult to support strategic growth. Their current setup presents several challenges that hinder both member satisfaction and revenue potential:
- Diversifying income streams: Historically, IPEM relied heavily on publication revenue. However, the rise of open access threatened this income, prompting the organisation to explore new sources of revenue through training and events.
- Supporting professional development: Members required a more seamless and integrated way to access training, record CPD, and demonstrate compliance with professional competency frameworks.
- Outdated CPD system: Previously, members used a generic third-party platform to record CPD. While functional, it was non-intuitive, accessed outside IPEM’s website, and not tailored to the organisation’s unique needs.
- Limited IT resources: As a smaller organisation with no on-site IT support, IPEM needed a partner that could provide end-to-end guidance and hands-on project management.
- Balancing complexity with usability: The LMS needed to support multiple learning formats, webinars, blended learning, and face-to-face events, while providing an intuitive interface for members and auditors.
The Solution: A Unified and Personalised Learning Platform
The selection of Moodle LMS was pivotal to address IPEM’s challenges and support their vision for digital transformation. Here’s how the features and capabilities of Moodle helped to alleviate their specific pain points:

1. Streamlined User Experience
Moodle LMS provided a comprehensive, user-friendly interface, which resolved the fragmentation of IPEM’s previous training system. With its capabilities, users can now seamlessly book training, pay for courses, and access resources in a unified platform.
I was really pleased to see IPEM launching their new Learning Management System. This provides users with a “one stop shop” for all the training needs. I have found it to be intuitive to use, and the layout is simple and clean and on-brand with the IPEM theme. The help guides are very useful and informative, and I was able to use the system easily.

2. Personalised Learning Paths
Initially, users faced challenges due to a lack of personalisation. Implementing Single Sign-On (SSO) functionality enabled the LMS to automatically tailor user experiences based on membership status, providing specific recommendations that addressed individual professional needs.
3. CPD Tracker Development
One of the standout features developed in collaboration with IPEM is the CPD Tracker. This function allows for easy recording and management of CPD activities, enabling professionals to fulfill their CPD requirements efficiently while providing oversight of their progress.
The CPD portal is easy to use, with the option record your CPD, or produce a competency report if needed. This allows you to match your activities against the relevant competency framework and undertake a gap analysis to see areas that are lacking. This provides an overview of how you are progressing and enables you to easily see areas that you need to focus on.

4. Integration with Existing Systems
To combat data silos, Moodle LMS ensured a seamless flow of information between the new system and IPEM’s existing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool, Microsoft Dynamics 365. This integration resolved technical barriers that previously hindered operational efficiencies.
5. Collaborative Implementation
Titus delivered a smooth and efficient implementation through strong project leadership and a highly collaborative approach. A dedicated project lead ensured clear communication and adherence to timelines, while regular check-ins enabled transparency, quick decision-making, and continuous progress. Specialist expertise was brought in as needed, allowing key features, such as the CPD plugin to be delivered rapidly and effectively, supporting IPEM’s goals from the outset.
The support from the team at Titus, has been brilliant since the day we began the project. Kris has really taken the time to support us and answer the very wide variety of questions we have had on the project, offering to jump onto calls with other suppliers to resolve issues. We have never been rushed either, 1:1 support was offered for as long as we needed to support us through an initial soft launch of our system.

Results: Tripled Revenue and a Mindset Shift
Since launching Moodle LMS, IPEM has achieved significant outcomes across engagement, user experience, and operational efficiency:
Rapid User Adoption and Growth Potential
Enhanced Member Experience Through Personalisation
Operational Efficiency
The Future: A Strategic Vision for 2026 and Beyond
IPEM is focused on continuous growth and improvement:
- Expanding content offerings and increasing user engagement
- Broadening paid training delivery to strengthen revenue streams
- Continuously enhancing the LMS to meet evolving member needs
Fully integrating all CPD processes in-house to streamline operations
This strategic partnership between Titus and IPEM has effectively future-proofed the organisation, establishing a robust digital platform for ongoing professional development and training. By diversifying their revenue streams and enhancing user experience, IPEM is now positioned to play a pivotal role in alleviating workforce challenges within healthcare, ensuring that members are well-equipped to meet the complex demands of modern medical technology.
IPEM’s new Learning Management System is a real step forwards in how we access and engage with professional development. The breadth of content, from webinars to blended learning and CPD tracking, makes it easier than ever to stay current. I’ve added some Laser Protection Adviser training onto the platform too, and it’s great to see these available free of charge to IPEM members via the LMS.
